A History of Blue Knights Wrestling at SHS in Southington, CT

Nearly Four Decades of Victories for Blue Knights Wrestlers and Coaches

Coach Bob Witttneben founded the Southington High Wrestling Team in December, 1974. He coached the squad for seven years, leading the Knights to an undefeated season (17-0) and Class LL State Championship in 1978.  When Coach Wittneben decided it was time to make a career change, the program was in danger of folding, as no one seemed willing to coach the team. Fortunately, Pete Sepko made the decision to step forward in the fall of 1981 and assume the head coaching responsibilities. That decision turned into a 20 plus year commitment for Coach Sepko, during which time he helped lead the Blue Knights to over 300 victories.

In 2001, Coach Sepko was named Wrestling Coach of the Year by the Connecticut High School Coaches Association and the State Wrestling Coaches Association.  Also, Derek Dion was named Assistant Coach of the Year by the State Wrestling Coaches Association.

When Coach Sepko decided it was time to pass on the head coaching responsibilities in 2003, he had an experienced assistant coach ready and waiting in the wings. Coach Derek Dion assumed the head coaching responsibilities, while Coach Sepko served as assistant coach until his retirement in 2006. Coach Dion and his coaching staff (Bill Lee, Marisa Calvi-Rogers, Brian Zaccagnino and volunteer coaches Kevin Seeger, Andy Hawley) continue to lead a proud program with a rich tradition, where Southington wrestlers don’t hope to win, they expect to win.

The 2012-2013 wrestling team finished strong with wins at the LL’s and the State Open. This year SHS Wrestling also had a presence at the New England’s. LL Champions included Nate Solomon (126) and Zach Maxwell (195). Nate was also named the Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament. LL place winners included Austin Sullivan (182) at 4th; Zach Murillo (106) and Zach Bylykbashi (120) at 5th and Travis Daly (285) at 6th. Zach Maxwell went on to win the State Open and place 6th at New England’s. Nate and Travis placed 5th and 6th at the Open. The SHS Wrestling Team finished 5th at the LL’s and 10th at the State Open.
