Head Coach Derek Dion

Coach Dion was a three letter varsity wrestler for Southington High School and earned All-Conference honors. Coach Dion was awarded his BS in Finance from Central Connecticut State University. He has been coaching since 1992 at SHS and Head Coach since 2003. Two key moments for Coach Dion were when he coached Bill Lee who became Southington’s 1st State Open Champion and Larry Liseo who was Southington’s second State Open Champion. During his tenure as head coach, the team has been CCC Conference Champions every year since 2007 and thirty six wrestlers have placed in the top 6 at the LL’s; fourteen wrestlers placed at the State Open; and eight have placed in the New England’s.

Coach Dion is a member of the Norwich Bulletin High School Ranking Committee for Wrestling. He has been involved with the youth wrestling program since 1989. He hosted a youth camp since the summer of 2008 which will continue as an annual opportunity for young wrestlers in Southington. He has also been instrumental in forming the Middle School Junior Knights Wrestling Club and is the Mid-State League Founder and Chairman.

Coach Dion in His Own Words

This year Southington Wrestling took a step towards being the dominant program that we once were. The sport of wrestling has changed in this state over the past few years. It has made it difficult to be competitive without a sound off-season program.

We were considered to be a top ten team in the state every week of the season. Although we had very little depth, the line up remained formidable, and every week a different wrestler or wrestlers stepped up and battled hard. This was a very fun group of kids to be around and an easy team to root for.

We have a core group of wrestlers with experience, and a few newcomers with great potential. The upcoming years offer great opportunities to continue stepping into that dominant program. The values of hard work, accountability, and teamwork that these seniors have done such a great job instilling in our team will serve as our foundation going forward. I’d like to thank them for all of their efforts, and look ahead to some great seasons as a result of them.
